  • Brush fire on the side of the road. Called FD. Already on their way. Why did I not bring my camera again? #
  • @dianarchy: AfroDiary! That would be a time trip. I love glancing back at my LiveJournal entries from like eight years ago. #
  • Now playing on FM 107.9 - one hit wonders of the 60s. Xlnt. #
  • Latest addition to the beer closet: Rogue Ale Mocha Porter. Guinnessy, a bit of a hoppy bite. Quite good. Big fan of the Rogue franchise. #
  • I am still amazed by my SIX bars everywhere I go with Sprint. I was so used to one bar or no service at all with AT&T for so long. #

i resolve

I’ve never really made New Years resolutions, and if I have, I’ve done it so half-assedly they’ve never even been written down.  With no way to gauge success or failure, one is always destined to fail.  Or simply succeed in forgetting the failure.

This year is different.  This year holds big things for the T household.  Huge things.  What exactly they are, I don’t quite know just yet.  What I do know is I am determined, now more than ever, to truly succeed in 2008.

  • I just got a call that one of my soldier’s son just died. What’s worse is he had twins, and his daughter died during delivery. Awful. #
  • @dianarchy: His son was about eight months old. #
  • Oh my gosh the kids had so much fun playing with paints today! Pics at T’s PWAlbum - http://tinyurl.com/2tx94h #

on children

To anyone whose primary source of information about me and my life is this weblog, I must seem an awful tit. I’m constantly bitching about work, daydreaming into the future, and fretting over the behavior of my kids. Honestly this isn’t the whole story. True, I have found myself a much more temperamental person since returning from Iraq, and I frequently find plenty to [legitimately?] complain about, but that negativity does not own me.

And my kids are amazing.

Mr. R is just about the most creative and imaginative little dude I have ever known.  He is so smart, and picks up on everything.  He corrects himself when he knows he’s said or done something wrong, and makes an effort to teach his baby sister all the things he knows (when he’s not busy beating her, that is).  And he has the best taste in music of any three year old I know (They Might Be Giants, Sufjan Stevens, Rick Moranis …), and even knows most of the words!

Ms. R is absolutely beautiful.  She’s tough, spry, and so ready to walk!  Her record so far is four steps, and I think she only stopped because she got so excited she fell over!

Mr. E is on the honor roll for like the hundredth time in a row, and has been his little league team’s starting pitcher for a season and a half.  I burned him some CDs a few years ago, and he told me on Christmas that he’d found them in his closet, and had been listening to them for the last week or so.  Modest Mouse, the Shins, Morphine - he rivals Mr. R for best taste in music :]  He’s grown up so fast, and it saddens me to know it will still be some time before I see him again.  Maybe we’ll get lucky and get stationed on the east coast next tour so we can be closer to him.

There’s so much more to say about these kids and my wonderful wife, I just don’t often have the time.  I wake at 4 to be out the door by 4:30 to beat the traffic and be to work by 5:30 to stand around until 6:30 for PT formation, then return at 9:00 to “start” the work day.  By the time I head home, it doesn’t matter what time it is, I’m exhausted.  Humans are not supposed to wake up so early, period.

Nobody wants excuses, though, so I’ll just keep on doing what I can to write when I can.

Mr-R LOVES Thomas and Friends, and now has several connecting tracks.
This one is awesome.

exifing

I have decided right from the start to shoot my D40 in RAW mode, to ensure any post-processing tips and tricks I learn in the future I will be able to apply to all of my images, not just those since the learning of the things with the stuff.

Much to my surprise, Picasa from Google will view the RAW files, making it just as quick and easy to blog a photo or upload them to flickr. Actually, this isn’t quite true. What Picasa does is reads the JPEG embedded inside the raw file - basically the image created for viewing on the camera’s LCD screen during review. The quality and size are perfect for me, but I lose all my EXIF data (not from the RAW, of course, just from the JPEG).

What does this mean to you? Or to me? In terms of viewing pleasure, very little. In terms of image management, a whole lot. I can no longer scour flickr for images in a certain timeframe, none of them show up in the flickr camera finder as taken by a D40, and none of the lens settings are retained. Academic, at best, but still important to me.

Ways around this? Stop using Picasa. Start using Lightroom or Capture NX or some other RAW converter. Easier said than done with only 512 megs of RAM. NX is slow, and Lightroom is virtually unusable. There is also the option of setting the camera to record a RAW and separate JPEG for each shot, but that’s a whole lot of duplicate images, and the JPEGs look awful! Plus this means I would then have to actually start processing the RAW files to get them to look like I want ‘em to. The embedded JPEGs look surprisingly good on their own.

Perhaps there’s some setting on the camera to embed the EXIF into the JPEG into the RAW :\ Any experienced Nikonians out there with any tips???

[EDIT] Ok, I searched the Picasa forums and figured out the problem.  While Picasa has been able to read Nikon’s .NEF RAW files for nearly three years, that’s all it does is display the embedded JPEG.  It can’t read any of the EXIF data at all.  Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to put RAM on my birthday wishlist!

plants need love too

While not the first time Mr-R has painted on his new easel, this was the first time little sister was invited to join in the fun. And what fun it was!
