littleR in the barnyard

This was my first attempt at a home studio session. I assembled the “studio” in about three seconds by tossing bigR’s blanket over two of the dining table chairs, just in front of the sliding glass doors (for better lighting).

I can’t imagine how good this could look in the backyard with some night late-afternoon light!

That’s nice! I really like! The only thing i’d do is.. I’d have put her on the right side two-thirds, since she’s looking to the left.. I always leave lots of space in the direction they’re looking/facing. That’s the best I can explain it. Lemme see if I can find an example.

I always try to follow the 2/3rds rule. I think sometimes too much.

I do totally dig the setting though!

Are we criticizing? I second the thirds rule. However I’m not crazy (I don’t hate it) about the background, it’s a lot of color and distracts me form the baby, but then again I’m easily distracted. Maybe try just a colored sheet or blanket? Or perhaps moving her closer to you and further way from the background. And I think the lighting is very good.

Do you have any shinny things? I like shinny things.

Yes, I understand the rule of thirds quite well. Note this was a very quick setup, and I was as far away from her has I could get (about two feet) without opening the door and going outside. The red and white striped part in the upper left side is the edge of the blanket. And if you think littleR will sit still with the door open …

Also, I was at just about max width on the blanket, so there was no way I could bank left to catch her on the side she was looking. I did what I could with what I had in the few seconds we had together before everyone else woke up!

Finally, I’d like to say most of these shots were done without even looking through the viewfinder - I just held the camera down because there was no room!
