easter, 2008, waikiki

Easter, 2008 was a bit nontraditional in our household this year. In fact it wasn’t even in our household, though that wasn’t intentionally planned.  After two years living in Hawaii, we decided to spend a weekend in downtown Waikiki, staying at a hotel on the beach.  No bunnies, no eggs, no candy; just a nice long Hawaiian weekend - like tourists!  Oh, the fun we had :]

The rest of the pictures have been posted for your viewing pleasure.

“American by force”. It’s a very special kind of racism we have here
on this island …

I tweaked the focus on this one a bit, and added the “widescreen”
bars. Now it is perfect for your desktop background. Go ahead. Do
it.

hnl zoo

Today we took a trip to the Honolulu Zoo. Tracy and the kids have been there two or three times before, but it was my first time.  Fun was had by all.  This photo proves it.

It’s not a particularly large zoo, but they do have some interesting plants and animals I’ve not seen anywhere else. Their herpetarium is excellent, and is full of very unattractive toads and lizards. And at four bucks a head for military types and kids under six for free, you’d be hard pressed to find a less expensive family outing in Honolulu.

The chimpanzees are an extremely loud bunch, and have made a habit of charging the glass and scaring the bejesus out of little kids. Raden approached their terrain cautiously, still remembering the infamous-in-our-neighborhood charging of July, 2007. Muddy footprints along the glass attest to the close, physical contact the primates seem to enjoy.

Highlights of the day include the white-handed gibbon who stole a cup from a child; the turtle who appeared to be … stuck on a rock; the meercat who said “Sup?”; and the mating Galapagos tortoises (photo not available).

River was ecstatic to be out and about, and Raden had a fabulous time watching all of the animals. The only down side? Hitting rush hour traffic on the way home. Nobody wants to be leaving Honolulu at 5PM!

Man I love living in Hawaii.

rain, water, repeat

We had another amazing tropical rainstorm tonight that brought with it lots of very cool lightning and, of course, tons of rain. No more than five minutes after the rain waned, the sprinklers came on. We then experienced an overlap of both sprinklers and rain for about three minutes. Finally, the sprinkling completed and the rain continued. As I write this, all watering has ceased, and the yard is flooded.

[Edit] It is just after 10AM and it is still raining.

I love the selection of totally unknown fruits we get here (not including the pineapple of course).

Kiddy rides + ponies + hot dog + bbq chicken + pumpkin hunting = a very enjoyable Sunday morning.  Well, enjoyable until the second time we went on the spinning pineapple ride and the kid we rode with would not.stop.spinning the pineapple!

As amusing as this sign is, I almost wish it said “No, seriously, NO STOPPING”.
