Yesterday I finished reading two books: Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris, and I Am America (And So Can You!) by Stephen Colbert.
This is not terribly remarkable, but change a few more words in that sentence and it certainly becomes so. In particular, the word “first”, when added to the mix, means I haven’t just finished two books this week, I’ve finished two books since returning from Iraq. For those watching their calendars, you’ll note that was six months ago.
Even as I write this, I’m glancing up at our bookshelf to see if I might be mistaken - if somehow I forgot to mention a few titles I’ve completed since returning home. After a quick glance, I see I’ve started a handful, but finished none until now.
Unfortunate, for sure, and when contrasted with the voracity with which I devoured titles in war, it’s downright depressing.
I started reading Ender’s Shadow last night, so if I can just figure out where my copy of “A” Is for Alibi, I’ll be all set at home and elsewhere (one book stays at home, the other travels with me to work, to the DMV, etc.).
