office[r] banter

I started writing down the things all the officers were chatting about this morning, but I felt myself getting progressively stupider with every word I transcribed.  I quit before the migraine had a chance to attack.

Suffice it to say the conversation revolved around a 2.8 GPA, Harvard, vegetables, and “manly” food (steak, eggs, etc.).

the almost vacation

As the newest smartest guy in the office, a few specific tasks fall on my shoulders: keeping the coffee pot full; playing music everyone can agree on; filling available TDY slots. (For those not in the know, TDY means going on travel for work.)

I’m always up for a nice trans-Pacific flight, so I was a tiny bit excited when told I would be leaving for Fort Bliss, TX for a week … in two days. I was also told I could take leave in conjunction with travel, amounting to a free plane ticket to and from the mainland.  I was ecstatic when I realized Fort Bliss is less than four hours away from Albuquerque!  Sister!  Brother!  Daniel!  Mo!

I resisted the urge to call everyone and have them all start making plans, and instead decided to wait for official word on my travel dates.  There were potentially some issues because I would be replacing someone else on the trip, and we needed to ensure the last-minute name change wouldn’t be an issue.

It wasn’t.  But here’s the part that made me glad I hadn’t gotten my hopes up too high.  Yes, they were able to swap my name for the other.  Unfortunately, rather than just changing the name on the ticket, they canceled the one (him), and added the other (me).  Except they couldn’t add the other (me), as the flights are all full now.  Sorry, no ticket for you (me).

It would have been an excellent trip, too.  Perhaps I’ll just spend the next few days attempting a Total Recall of the trip’s details …

On the silver lining side, I no longer have to reschedule my dental appointment (again) nor my vasectomy consult (again).
